twenty-twelve: an appreciation

Inspired by Emma's lovely post on Lolita Says So, I decided to do my own spot of reminiscing. Now that it's twenty-thirteen, I'm on a countdown to a major deadline, and there isn't the excitement of adventures to keeping my spirits high, it's easy to forget how good the year just gone was. Looking back through photos (a lot of photos), emails and postcards presented the optimum form of procrastination and helped me compile the list below.

Here are just some of the highlights of 2012:

-spent 3/4 of the year living in New York and Sydney
-worked in the office of Stefano Tonchi at W magazine
-hung out backstage at a music festival
-swam in the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the South China sea, garden pools, rural lakes, and a hot tub.
-moved in to a city centre apartment with a BFF (and a balcony)
-experienced a Yankees game for the first time. And beer pong. And cheese fries.
-worked with Lara Stone
-pulled my first ever all-nighter, and got lost on the 1 train in the Bronx
-lived with 3 gorgeous guys in a Bondi bachelor pad (Zooey Deschanel, watch your back)
-travelled to Bali and Hong Kong, with highlights including being blessed in Holy Waters, falling in a rice paddy, lapping the luxury of my own private villa and fully exploring my love for authentic dim sum.
-survived the year with no minus figures in my bank account (a miracle)
-got an iPhone. And a better iPhone
-became Fashion Editor for Leeds Student
-became Fashion Editor for PDF.zine (working title)
-ate my weight in canapes at fashion events. And then ate a few more.
-died my hair blue. And pink, and purple, and turquoise.
-learnt new forms of travel: rode by motorbike in Bali, partied on a private yacht in Sydney, learnt to paddle board and sailed in Montauk
-finally got a subscription to a newspaper, as well as becoming an ambassador for the i paper
-visited and fell in love with the arty culture of Melbourne, the history of Boston, and the yuppy culture of the Hamptons
-bought a Diana camera (though am yet to perfect the art of lomography)
-got on board with the visual arts, including seeing my first ever circus in New York, Wind in the Willows, Singing in the Rain and Guys and Dolls, visiting Jeff Koons' Puppy in Connecticut, Tim Walker's Storyteller, Kusama at the Whitney…plus, bi-weekly visits to the Met, the MoMa and the Gugg
-watched the sun set over mountains, over temples, over rice paddies, over skylines and over seas. (One of the highlights being from the balcony in British summer with a sangria in hand.)
-visited Brick Lane for the first time: it's awesome
-lived like a true New Yorker, s'all bagels, late nights, overpriced cocktails and rooftop parties
-returned to university/ almost quit university
-walked the Brooklyn Bridge, went to the Top of the Rock, climbed the Blue Mountains, looked out from Victoria Peak, swam at Bondi beach, explored English countryside
-interviewed Zac Posen, Baz Luhrmann, Feist, The Drums, Fun., Susan Sarandon, Chris Rock, Kate Upton, Kelly Osborne, among others
-discovered/ overplayed/ fell head over heels in love with Frank Ocean
