When I was a teenager embarking on 3-week summer holidays en famille, I vividly remember my sister and I typing up holiday check-lists on our Windows ’97 computer. The lists always featured “make compilation tape” and “buy magazines”, along with things like “buy miniatures”, “pack face-masks”, and “buy camera film”. I haven’t really changed then because I still write holiday to-do lists when I’m going away, only, they’re a lot shorter these days. If I don’t I forget things or get there and think I really wish I did X, Y and Z. Peru was my trip of the summer, which feels like a long time ago back in May. Granted, the to-do list for that one was lengthy with important save-my-life things like “get jabs” and “order malaria tablets”, but there were my more regular inclusions too, which I thought I’d run through here. I’m telling you, make all the difference to the perfect holiday (and okay, those all-important holiday snaps).
As I think a lot of you noticed on my Going to Peru vlog, I got my lashes done just before my trip, which is simply my FAVOURITE THING TO GET DONE EVER. I know people do have mixed opinions on lash extensions but I absolutely love them because a) they make me feel like a princess, b) completely eliminate the need for mascara, which is great when you’re on holiday and in and out of the water, and c) look WAY better than mascara anyway. I’ve had them done a few of times, but this latest time was via a beautician I found last minute on Gumtree, raaaandomly. They take about 1.5 hours to apply, last about 3 weeks, and these cost an absolute BARGAIN at £30. I’ve paid up to £165 for a set so was a bit worried what I was letting myself in for, but honestly, couldn’t rate Zoe more, so if you’re in the Hackney area, GO! (Tweet me and I'll give you her number!)
There’s nothing worse than realising half way through your holiday, when you’re all sun-kissed and bronzed, that oh shit, you’ve got the worst dry skin and you’re about to shed your coat. Exfoliate BEFORE your trip, and on the first few days during too, for the longest lasting summer glow.
Now, unless I’m getting a dye or a major overhaul, I tend to just cut my hair myself. No really, I do. In the bathroom or on the balcony, I just chop, chop, chop all the way round and it always turns out okay-ish (I mean, my hair is pretty textured anyway so you can’t really tell it’s not straight and the worst that happens is I have to tie it up. I’m really not precious about it). Totally recommend it though, be it just around the front, the ends, or your fringe. The tiniest trim makes all the difference and makes you look way fresher. Especially for a bob like mine, I really notice the difference in my holiday pics, so it’s always something I remember to do before I go away.
Check sunglasses situation
A quick one but an important one…sunglasses! Nothing more annoying than getting to the beach and finding that ah, your prized sunnies are missing an arm. Check out the sunglasses situ before you go, check you can find them, check they’re not broken, and check they still look how you want them to. If they don’t pass the test, do what I do and order 50,000 pairs from ASOS with next day delivery to decide between. Perfect!
Summer sandals without painted toenails is a situation that makes me want to cry. Don’t find yourself there. I don’t know about you but I personally find painting my nails a total chore so tend to leave the same polish on for a good 2 months (is that gross?). Get ‘em painted and out of the way early, or treat yourself and book in for a pedi, just make sure it’s a box ticked by the time you get on the plane, ‘cos you’ll never find the time when you’re on your hols and you’ll be CURSING.
