When it comes to beauty, I’m really pretty clueless. Cosmetics-wise, I own a mascara, a couple of lipsticks, an eyebrow pencil, a BB cream, and that’s all, and am actually happiest wearing nothing at all. (A tan and lash extensions is my ultimate fuss-free beauty situation.) As for skincare, well, it’s a minefield out there. All these toners, lotions and potions confuse the hell out of me. I don’t have the time, commitment, nor storage space for a whole ‘skincare regime’, and given I’m travelling a lot/ getting ready at the gym most of the time, it really helps to be a minimalist. My mum looks great and all she’s ever used is Vaseline and baby lotion, so I’m following suite with her simple approach, only, I’ve adopted my own two products to swear by. A cleansing oil, and a balm, and that's all I use on my skin these days.
My best friend, the very opposite of me, in fact Deputy Beauty Editor at Look, first introduced me to cleansing oils. I missed the concept entirely to start with and rubbed the oil into my face on a cotton ball, before realising it was to be used instead of a face wash. DHC Cleansing Oil is now one of my only two go-to, take-it-everywhere beauty products. It’s a face wash and a make-up remover combined, and perfect for those of us who can’t be bothered to labour over the sink the morning/ evening. Every night, I squirt two pumps of oil in my hand, wash it all over my face and around my eyes, run the hot tap, and wash it off. It’s that easy, all your mascara comes off with it and your skin feels clean and fresh. It’s definitely improved my skin, I get less niggly zits and blackheads and it’s not oily at all any more.
My second swear-by product is Antipodes Saviour Skin Balm. It still makes me laugh because I’m so not a swear-by-it kind of girl. I’ve always been an “Ah, the cheapest will be fine” kind of beauty gal, but again, this really clears up my skin, and seems to keep it the perfect balance of non-oily and non-dry, so I use it morning and night in place of a moisturiser/ night cream/ day cream. In the morning I put it straight on my skin after washing my face, and just before bed, I put it on after cleansing my face with the oil. To tell you the truth, I’m not sure it’s actually meant to be a face product; it’s a “potent conditioning balm” with “antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial healing properties of Australian tea tree and New Zealand totara” — so all natural and pure. Either way though, it's one of the best skincare products I've used, hence it's become an essential in my two-step daily routine. It’s also the perfect travel product because it doubles up as a lip balm, sunburn and dry skin relief, and in-flight hydration. Try it and don’t look back!
