Back in Jan, I took mum away for a dreamy little staycation at The King’s Head in Beverley. It’s a pub with rooms in a picture-perfect market town between Hull and York, and is the ideal place for a little getaway that isn’t too fancy nor going to break the bank. Don’t go expecting a spa or the royal treatment, it’s charmingly simple: a pub with good grub and contemporary, ’country-chic’ rooms. Just what you want sometimes, right?
I got the train up from London on Saturday afternoon and met mum in Beverley. I think we were a bit spoilt 'cos our room had to be the nicest of the lot with its big roll top bath at the foot of the bed — hands down, my favourite place for a bath! Granted, it’s more suited to romantic couple weekends rather than mum and daughter weekends, so neither of us ended up making use of it but STILL, it’s an excellent decor feature in my eyes.
Beverley is a web of streets around a cobbled main market square, with a nice selection of restaurants and bars, upmarket stores and independent boutiques. It’s not only got a Cathedral but a Minister too, so it's a popular spot on international visitors’ buckets lists who are ticking off historical Britain.
Back at the Kings Head, it was dinner time! The pub had got quite busy with locals by 7ish, but we had a nice table in the bay window and had such a nice evening catching up with delicious comfort food! We shared a veggie pie and chips, and a wholesome halloumi, lentil and broccoli salad, and rounded it off with apple crumble and custard. All yum!
Up in the room, we embraced a very leisurely evening, with more chatting and mindless Saturday night TV, that in situs like this, is really just the ticket! The pub does get pretty lively on Saturday evenings, so expect some noise from the bar... All good though, they give you ear plugs for that! Just a warning though: light sleepers and keen complainers, maybe avoid Saturday night…
The next morning, we had both had a delicious veggie Full English. We did a little more pottering and visited the grand Minister (very impressive!) before packing up and driving over to Leeds to spend Sunday wedding dress shopping with my sister. Laid-back girly weekends aren’t that common in my world, but I gotta say, it felt so GOOD! Isn’t Mum time the best!?
