Tried + Tested: The Vincent, For Wholesome, Summer Food

The Vincent Hackney Downs - Flash Anthology

As we don’t have a kitchen at the moment we’re finding ourselves eating out a ~lot~ and it’s kind of hard to stay healthy. I always go with the best intentions, then religiously end up ordering something-and-chips. (I’m definitely not saying chips are bad, but they’re not something you should eat every night of the week…). Likewise, there are often occasions where you’ve planned to meet a friend for dinner but really crave just a healthy, wholesome meal.

I just discovered The Vincent, a great laid-back restaurant in Hackney Downs from the guys behind The Sebright Arms, and hey presto, it’s the perfect spot for guilt-free eating out. Along with pretty interiors and an extensive craft beer list featuring all the best pale ales (Five Points, Mikkeller, Beavertown, The Kernel), it’s got a delicious menu that’s half buns and half bowls — the latter being full of healthy, wholesome options.

Ed and I went to check it out one sunny evening last month. The fresh space full of greenery and bright tile-topped tables, and the colourful dishes just exude summer vibes. We’d just got back from Copenhagen so were buzzing that Mikkeller made the beer list too…

We dived straight into the menu, hitting up the ‘bowls’, each full of all sorts of deliciousness and interesting flavour combos. They’ve got plenty of great veggie and vegan options on there…

I went for the Vegeree — an epic combo of spiced sweet potato, halloumi, candied beetroot fritters, curried rice, a soft boiled egg, golden raisins, peas and mango pickle. I absolutely loved the sweetness of the mango in the mix, and for just £8 for all those ingredients, it's a bloody bargain.

Ed got the slow-cooked, torn harrissa lamb bowl with spiced freekeh, pickled cucumber salad, and cumin and poppy seed flat bread. We couldn't resist getting slaw and pardon peppers on the side. That fresh, super light slaw, I’d  write home about. Even asked for the secret recipe.

Ed, being Ed, thought he might just like to ~sample~ the buns part of the menu, so counteracted the healthiness with the buttermilk fried chicken bun as a chaser! In all fairness, we had ran Copenhagen Marathon the day prior so two mains was simply refilling supplies…right?!

We thought The Vincent was great — a perfect summer’s evening spot for a beer or two, and a colourful, tasty dinner.
