T’is the season, he’s almost here! With just a few more sleeps until Christmas Day, no doubt you’ve done almost all of your Christmas shopping, eaten your year’s quota of mince pies, and had Maria Carey stuck in your head for the last 14 days straight. All that’s left to think about is the big day itself and the finishing touches for entertaining the family.
When it comes to the entertaining, Christmas really is the season to go all out! We’ve spent the last few months doing up our little flat, so decided to host everyone at ours last weekend for our first ever ‘fakemas’. It was so much fun! But so much to think about, from making sure we had enough fizz, to timing the sprouts just right, and decorating the table so it was exactly the festive set up we wanted. For this post. I’ve partnered with Villeroy & Boch, who kindly sent me this gorgeous Christmas crockery (which I’ve grown so attached to I’m considering keeping it out all year), to share some of my last minute tips if you’re entertaining this Christmas. With no time to waste, let's get right into it...
— Want your G&T aperitifs to look a little more festive? Freeze cranberries in your ice cubes to add a little berry colour, and garnish with rosemary.
— Make your champagne toast extra festive with edible glitter — just drop it in and watch it sparkle!
— A classic Christmas playlist playing softly in the background is the perfect way to set the mood. Spotify has a load of great playlists ready to go...
— Serve snacks and starters on marble boards or wooden trays for a more luxe aesthetic.
— Dim the lights and go big with the candles. They transform the feel of a space and make it feel so cosy. If you're feeling the pinch, Aldi's Pomegranate candle (£3) smells incredible and burns so well. I love this brass candlestick holder from IKEA too!
— For a minimalist and luxurious set up, go natural with the table decorations. Pinecones look great, satsumas with their leaves on also work wonderfully on a linen table cloth, sprigs of holly are classic, and trimmed fronds from the back of your Christmas tree look gorgeous, wrapped with ribbon.
— As for the rest of your home, spread the festive feel with sprigs of mistletoe hanging or placed on pillows, a Christmassy-scented candle in the bathroom, and red roses in vases or pretty old gin bottles in the communal spaces.
— Christmas crockery is a no brainer! This red and white set it something I'll be bringing out every year from now on — definitely worth investing in to be the hostess with the mostest!
— Don't forget pull crackers! A Christmas do ain't a Christmas do without cracker hats!
— Thinking about nibbles with drinks? Top little melba toast with a swipe of salmon paté and a king prawn — delicious. As for a crowd-pleasing easy starter, tip out a pot of cream cheese on to a board, cover with sweet chilli sauce, garnish with plenty of chopped coriander, and serve with poppy-seed crackers. A sweet and spicy winner!
— Looking for a showstopper dessert you can't screw up? I've got the perfect no-bake cheesecake recipe for you...
— All out of After Eights? Mix it up and dish out lebkuchen with coffee, a traditional German Christmas treat.
— Got the fam staying over night? Hot chocolates go down a treat before bed. Don't forget the squirty cream and a little grated chocolate on top.
And finally, don't forget to ENJOY it. You've put in the hard work, slaved away in the kitchen, but the most important bit of all is to relax and make the most of it with your nearest and dearest...
