Tried + Tested: Sundays At Aside, Peckham

Aside is one of the best restaurants in Peckham, and certainly one of my faves. A tiny little spot that you’ll need Google Maps to find if you're not a local, it’s got perfect interiors (terrazzo worktops and Danish furniture) and a menu that strictly focuses on seasonal, local ingredients. I’ve wrote about Aside on here before, but we finally got round to trying the Sunday menu and it was too good not to share…

Naturally, the Sunday menu centres roast dinners, though with more options than you get at all the pubs nearby, plus a few beautiful seasonal starters. We went with Ed’s parents and shared the pickled mackerel with rhubarb and creme fraîche, the beetroot with pear and hazelnuts, and the celeriac and chestnut soup, which we had last time but got again because it is so, so delicious.

The roasts are elegantly stacked like Jenga towers, with an XXL Yorkshire pudding on top, roast potatoes, and the most dramatic-looking whole charred carrot (best way to do carrots!). They were out of the roast cauliflower (the direct veggie roast alternative) so I got the hake — delicious it was too, a hefty fillet on roasted pink fir potatoes with a creamy, moreish wild garlic sauce.

On to dessert (because Sundays aren’t Sundays without pudding), we devoured the comforting rhubarb and apple crumble, doused in creamy custard, and stole forkful's of Ed's mother's mouth-coatingly rich chocolate pudding...
