5km outside of swishy St Moritz, there’s Nira Alpina: my idea of a perfect ski hotel. Cosy, welcoming, relaxed and luxurious, it’s just the place you want to come back to after a long day on the slopes. And once you’ve kicked off your boots and dumped your kit in the ski-in boot room, there’s the glorious spa to see the evening in into. Bliss.
Set in the pretty village of Silverplana, you’re mega close to the best of the slopes, and in easy distance of the glitz and glamour of St Moritz. Just 5km from the centre of the world famous destination, you’re able to make most of the resort’s glamorous appeal, whilst relaxing into a more laid-back, low-key stay. Because let’s be honest, that fancy pants life can get tiring quick.
All glass and wood, with sleek lines, local materials, Alpine-chic furnishings, animal skin rugs, and vintage skis hanging on the walls of the lobby, Nira Alpina is part of the Design Hotels collection and is set to please adventurers and aesthetes alike. The 70 bedrooms are roomy, with floor-to-ceiling windows, beautiful views, and slick modern bathrooms. Up on the top floor, there’s the restaurant and bar, where you can get a gastronomic 3-course dinner or on some nights, fondue; and a cosy lounge where you could happily spend an afternoon off the slopes, with a book in front of the fire. We had a brilliant gin masterclass up here on one of the nights too, zealously sampling our way through the selection of European gins. The extensive breakfast buffet is served up here each morning, and will fuel you up for a full day on the slopes with everything from fresh fruit to eggs, Swiss cheeses, pancakes and pastries.
Spas and skiing go hand in hand in my book, and Nira Spa is a real treat. We’d max out our afternoons, taking the last lift up and a leisurely run down in the last of the sun, then soothe our weary legs in the serene whirlpool that looks out over the valley.
