Once you’ve tired of East London’s endless burgers and sourdough pizza places, try something different and little more exotic at Arepa and Co., a great Venezuelan spot on Bethnal Green’s Paradise Row.
A real taste of South America, chances are if you haven’t travelled Venezuela, you’ll have to ask what have the dishes are, but that’s totally fine, and you know what, gives you a kind of ‘holiday in London’ experience, no? My best pal and I went for dinner a couple of weeks back and got things started with a couple of cocktails along with the canoas de Maiz (bit like a stuffed corn crepe), and a portion of yuca fries — which, in my opinion, are way better than straight up normal potato fries… Addictive.
Moving on to the mains, I definitely recommend the (veggie) Pabellon: a traditional Venezuelan dish which is ultimately a rice bowl topped with all sorts of good stuff, like black beans, plantain, sweet potato and cheese. So many delicious flavours in there. My friend went for another traditional dish: the braised pork cachapas, which is a thin corn-based pancake piled up with tender pork, crackling, avocado, tomatoes, lime and jerk mayo.
For dessert, if you’ve room, you need to sample the tres leches cake. Get one and get multiple spoons though, or else you’ll be wheeled out of there… It’s rich as hell with three types of cream and milk, but boy oh boy, it’s insane.
Already excited to go back for lunch…
