Great East Swim 2 Miles

So I don’t really think of myself of ‘a swimmer’ but I just went big and swam two whole miles! Yep, last weekend I went to Ipswich to take on Great East Swim and swam a mighty two miles — my longest ever swim — in open water, in Alton Water lake. I do feel it’s important to stress here that even if you suck at front crawl (like i do, i can’t do it), you can still totally take on long distance and open-water swimming events. You just do whatever stroke you want and roll with it. I did the whole two miles breaststroke and honestly, loved it!

Two miles was a real step up for me, literally double last year’s efforts when I swam one-mile open water for Great London Swim, but I was determined to do the longer distance this year and managed it by going leisurely, staying relaxed and keeping it at my own pace. Course, it was tough, my arms were dead by a mile in, but mentally, I actually found it more manageable than a long-distance running race. The water felt like a support, my full length wetsuit felt buoyant, and I really just focused on that Finding Nemo mentality...'just keep swimming’! It was the most glorious sunny day so I think that helped in making it feel like I was just out for a long dip! Doing it breaststroke means generally it felt more leisurely (it would have been a very different story if it was front crawl I was doing!) and meant I really got to appreciate the scenery. 'Cos that's important, right!?

When it comes to swimming, I bloody love it but I’d say with time restraints and a slightly hectic schedule, I’m not truly committed to the cause. On holidays, you can’t keep me out of the water but back in London, it’s sadly more of a ‘when I find the time’ kind of passion as it’s never as easy to fit into my schedule as running or cycling. There must be a way though…

On the scale of things, I’d say I’m a pretty strong, relatively fearless breaststroke swimmer (thanks dad for pulling us across glacier-fed lakes when we were tiny!) but yep, I really can’t do front crawl, and that totally knocks my confidence thinking about what I’m capable of or when I’m talking to others about swimming.

But that’s why I’m really quite so proud of this two mile achievement. It’s given me some confidence to say actually, yep, I am a swimmer, and I'm definitely feeling inspired to try to spend more time in the lido, and even work on my crawl. Maybe distance isn’t the next challenge, it’s front crawl. Now that scares me…
