I think its fair to say Sparrow is the best thing —along with Model Market— to happen to Lewisham in a very long time. Opened in 2017, it is, in my eyes, the perfect restaurant (relaxed, great staff, excellent seasonal sharing plates) and is the very reason I'll be going back to hangout in Lewisham.
I’m not going to lie, I was excited about Sparrow as soon as I heard about it. Two ex-St John folks putting South East London even more on the map. GREAT STUFF. There really is a mega food scene around here now, from Aside to Coal Rooms and Pedler in Peckham, Marcella in Deptford, and now Lewisham’s got its very own very excellent hotspot.
As I could easily summarise our first dinner at Sparrow in very few words ("TOTALLY DELICIOUS. Go go go!") I’m going to let the pictures do most of the talking. A brief breakdown though: start with the burrata — one of the best I’ve had recently, served with sweet grilled romano peppers — and get some of the freshly baked focaccia to soak up that wonderful stracciatella centre. The panzanella salad was one of my faves, with sharp, salty capers and anchovies, and the fennel and brown shrimp salad deliciously fresh and light too. For the larger of the small plates, we went the grilled octopus with confit potatoes and tomato salsa, and the special of the day, an Asian-y duck with picked cucumbers and crunchy spring onions, which Ed was totally wild for.
I'd recommend finishing off with condensed milk affogato — the perfect little finisher to a proper excellent meal. Yep, we absolutely loved Sparrow. It's perfect date night vibes and I'm looking forward to going back. I promise, it's worth coming down to SE13 for.
