Avocado on toast is delicious, but sometimes you want brunch to be just a little more, well, exciting. And that’s when you go to Smoking Goat. Thai barbecue spot in Shoreditch, it’s 100% delicious, and its brunch is really something to write home about — think curried eggs, noodles and freshly made rotis... so good.
The breakfast menu runs from 10am Thursday through to Sunday, so you’ll have to start your week with your basic eggs and avo. Get things rolling with a fresh watermelon juice. So fresh and sweet and exotic, with the restaurant windows wide open and the warm breeze blowing in, you’ll feel like you’re there in Thailand. If you’re feeling snoozy, get a Vietnamese coffee — a real kick-up-the-arse for your day, with strong coffee and condensed milk, it's a recipe you make you buzz in your seat…
One dish each would be plenty but my friend and I wanted to explore the menu so shared the curried saffron eggs to start. Like a spicy, fragrant omelette served with a spicy homemade Sriracha, my favourite thing about this dish is that there isn’t any saffron in it giving it its colour. Instead the hens eat the saffron which makes the eggs so yellow…crazy! For the main event, it's all about the rotis. Yessss, the delicious, light, fluffy rotis, freshly cooked on a charcoal skillet, served with punchy, flavourful toppings like smoked aubergine, cured Tamworth jowl, and beef sausage, all with fried eggs and thai garnish. Being veggie, I got the aubergine — the most delicious, melt-in-your-mouth aubergine to exist, served with a runny yolk fried egg, fresh chilli, lashings of fresh coriander, and creamy Kewpie mayo.
Should it have been the weekend and an hour or so later, I’d have indulged in the ‘breakfast wine’ offering too, and maybe the smoked haddock thai gravy noodles too, which felt a little indulgent for a Thursday at 10am… No complaints though, thankful for a reason to go back soon.
