I love Bao but I’ve always been put off by the idea of having to queue — it’s the same reason I still haven’t been to Hoppers! But their second site in Fitzrovia is bigger than the original with less queues, a larger menu, and you can even book a table. Win!
Bao Fitz is a beautiful space, with large windows flooding the restaurant with natural light and a sleek round wooden bar that you sit up to on stools. I so love the branding too. It’s minimal but playful, and I love the way you tick off your order on the little paper menus.
I went for lunch with two friends and loved it. The menu lends itself to getting as little or as much as you want, so you don't need to leave there waddling and uncomfortably full (though, my eyes were a little bigger than my belly...).I can't recommend the black cod bao enough. It's mega and not on the menu at the Soho site. So fresh and tasty and rich in flavour. I can’t comment on it personally but if you’re into fried chicken I'd take it as a good sign that everyone around us had an order of the fried chicken bao front of them — clearly a popular choice! The dan dan potato noodles are a take on traditional dan dan noodles and are topped with an egg yolk that you mix in like you often do with carbonara. They’re a little bit crunchy and with a generous amount of fiery hot flavour. The deep fried mushrooms with lovage are ace. Super crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and served with a deliciously moreish chilli-onion dip. They're a great little snack. Finally, something green to balance it all out. The house salad (raw kale with a sesame dressing) is light and simple but surprisingly tasty. I'd definitely get it again.
I loved Bao Fitz. Less queues than the OG, more options, and the black cod bao. Rate it, loved it, will be going back soon!
