After a particularly taxing Monday in the office, 50 minutes of punching a bag in a dark room seemed like a really great idea. Enter, PUNCH: the newest class to land on the schedule at Virgin Active. It's a high-intensity boxing-based workout interspersed with circuits. It’s a full body burner and a guaranteed stress reliever. I walked in grumpy AF and left sky high on endorphins.
PUNCH is currently on the schedule in the Virgin Active Cannon St studio. The 50-minute class made up of 12 quick fire rounds: six on the bag and six on the floor with TRX, kettlebells and smash ball circuits. Half the class is on the bag while the other half is tackling circuits, and changeovers are speedy, so it’s pretty go, go, go. I did find myself a little confused as to what I was meant to be doing at times, what with the changeovers being so quick, but I’m sure with a couple sessions under your belt, you quickly get the hang of things in there. Gloves are provided (and aren’t totally sweaty and gross like in some studios) and by switching up what you’re doing so often, I did find that you didn’t end up getting too fatigued. That said, the class is pretty furious, and though none of the individual movements feel too taxing, I haven’t sweated so much in a Virgin Active class in ages. Proper dripping off the nose vibes. PUNCH is a proper full on workout that’s gonna leave you floored (then feeling EPIC).
Course, with it being a boxing-based class your arms and shoulders do get put through their paces (at least my puny little things did), but you’ll find you feel it everywhere the next day. Kettlebell lunges and pistol squats will fire up your legs, and the final killer round on the bag is a total core burner. I was aching for two days afterwards — in that kind of great way that means you really did good. It’s an awesome workout for sculpting arms, abs and shoulders.
The studio is dark, the music is loud, and the 50 minutes fly by. If you’re someone who ends up clock-watching in the gym, get booked into PUNCH for a high-power session.
