I very rarely venture west of Oxford Circus. On my bike it’s far, and there's plenty of great stuff happening East and South East, so it has to be something pretty special that makes me cycle all that way. Let it be known, Gold in Notting Hill is that something special. A slice of summer holiday slap bang in the middle of Portobello Road, it’s got a sun-drenched al-fresco dining terrace where you can enjoy grilled seafood and loads of vegetable-heavy sharing plates, a sophisticated but far-from-stuffy ambience, and some juicy natural wines. Upstairs, a beautifully styled blush pink dining room is great (for dreaming of summer) though the cooler months.
I went to Gold for lunch with a friend recently and totally loved it. You will too. It’s fresh, tasty, and all perfect for sharing. The menu is split into sections with the biggest emphasis being on seasonal vegetable dishes. For maximum by-the-sea holiday vibes (no, you’re nowhere near the sea here but it really feels like you’re on hols) get the wood roasted sea bream, with wild oregano and capers. So simple and totally perfect if you're into whole fish and wanna really feel like you're on hols.
From the veggies section, the wood-roasted peppers are great, with stracciatella, anchovies and toast (a dream combo), as is the ultra-light broad bean, pea, farro and Berkswell cheese salad. It’s a banger.
As for drinks, start with the Baklava Fizz — it’s light and refreshing but the tequila kick is gonna get you in the mood. Then if you’re into the natural stuff, Tillingham Wines PN18 Pet Nat is a damn tasty drop.
Loved Gold a lot. My only problem is the fact that it’s all the way west… But I can’t wait to go back and try more dishes.
