In this post, I’m taking you to Oxfordshire, to Artist Residence — a boutique hotel that is, in my eyes, is the very idea of the ultimate country staycation (one that’s actually frequented by countryside locals too). 15 minutes outside of Oxford city centre, it’s a pub with rooms. 5 rooms to be exact, each one perfectly formed with homely, country-chic interiors, roll top bath tubs and the comfiest beds you could wish for.
When you rock up and roll inside, you’re greeted by the roaring fire in the pub. Bliss. Room not quite ready? Treat yourself to a glass of fizz by the fire, catching up on the papers while the team check you in. Life runs more leisurely here — it’s so luxurious and calm. Directly upstairs, the rooms are set around 2 corridors in the eaves, and though it feels homely and intimate, you can’t hear a peep from any of the other rooms. I stayed in one of the Farmhouse Loft rooms and it was absolutely gorgeous — spacious and light, with wooden beams and flooring, old school rugs, a giant bed with a comfy upholstered headboard, antique and eclectic furniture, and it overlooked the chickens running around outside! The beautiful bathroom, stocked with Bramley toiletries, had a contemporary subway-tiled rainfall shower, and a dreamy roll top bath — I was really spoilt for choice! Elsewhere in the rooms, you’ve got free WiFi, a flatscreen TV, a Roberts DAB radio, a Nespresso machine and a minibar stocked with local goods. I even had a freshly baked cookie waiting for me in my room when I arrived — talk about a warm welcome!
During the day, you can explore the grounds and the pub’s vegetable gardens at your leisure, or don your wellies and go further afield into Oxfordshire’s great outdoors. Come back to your room in time for an afternoon bath (the ultimate luxury!), and a G&T in Mr Hanbury’s Mason Arms, the cosy pub downstairs. The Hanbury Dining Room is eclectically decked out with wooden furniture, Andy Doig’s neon signs and a bold House of Hackney rose wallpaper that will really grow on you, I promise. Proudly local, the ingredients are all sourced within a 25-mile radius, with many of the herbs and veg coming straight from the garden. There’s a tasting menu option for dinner which is full of exciting ideas and flavours, along with an a la carte menu, Garden menu, Sunday lunch and breakfast — the latter served 8-10am (so hold the snoozing!) with all your classic fry up and eggs and soldiers options.
Artist Residence Oxfordshire is the perfect spot for cosy weekend break with your loved one. You'll leave feeling rested and reset.
