Weekends away are the ultimate reset button. I’m a big believer in that, and whether it’s a quick trip overseas or a one-night stay somewhere, it’s a break from routine and quality time with whoever you choose to spend it with. The Hoste in Norfolk is the dream for a British country staycay, set in postcard-pretty Burnham Market and not far at all from gorgeous Holkham Beach…
January is miserable for all sorts of reasons, so a weekend of relaxing and delicious food at The Hoste was just what we needed. We were staying in one of the super-roomy Divine Rooms in the main building, which was elegantly decorated and ultra-comfortable. The Hoste has 62 rooms in total, including those at Railway House and the super luxurious Vine House which is just across the road (that’s more of a special occasion stay-cay spot!) There’s also a spa, a cinema, a gym, two great restaurants and The Hoste Arms, an oldy-worldy bar which dates back over 400 years.
We had a really delicious dinner in the more formal of the two restaurants, a gorgeous wood-panelled dining room that’s a popular dinner spot with the locals too. The menu focuses on seasonal and local Norfolk produce, so we kept it mainly seafood based given we were so near the coast. The hand-dived king scallops and smoked salmon starters were heavenly, followed by the pan-roasted turbot for me and the sea bass for Ed — all so fresh and delicious. The table near us got the cheeseboard which looked too good to pass up (!) and I’m a sucker for a panna cotta. Definitely book a table for dinner while you’re here, the food really is excellent.
Back in our room, we had the bubbliest of bubble baths, before diving into that giant bed. A leisurely morning was spent in bed with Ed watching Match of the Day and me reading the papers — a dream that never happens at home. I had a massage booked too, so headed down to the spa for the most delicious 60 minutes working out all of my niggles. Bliss!
We reluctantly checked out mid-morning so to make the most of being in Norfolk. I definitely recommend a stroll and lunch at Holkham Beach — it will blow away any last cobwebs before you head back home! We'll absolutely be back to Burnham Market, I've got my eye on a room at Vine House...
