Located in spitting distance from the sea (and more importantly, from not one but two of Brighton’s best-rated fish and chip shops) ARTIST RESIDENCE is the perfect place to stay for a little seaside staycation. Quirky, characterful and charming, it embodies all that Brighton is. (This was my first trip to Brighton and I absolutely bloody loved it.)
The 25 rooms are compact but cosy, each one individually and eccentrically designed with upcycled furniture and a nod to seaside chic. Comfy beds have leather headboards, colourful collages and murals dress up white walls, red Roberts Radios add a dose of retro, subway-tiled bathrooms are stocked with eco-conscious Bramley toiletries, and an amply stocked minibar has all sorts of delicious sweet and savoury snacks. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a sea view — I could see it glistening from my bed — otherwise, you get to look out over the very pretty Regency Square. And if you’re really lucky, you’ll get one of the rooms with a roll top bath.
Call it a night at The Fix, the hotel’s cocktail bar that’s all moody dark walls, tropical prints and neon lights, which serves a selection of creative cocktails using all seasonal ingredients ’til midnight.
On the ground floor, The Set is the hotel’s restaurant and a very popular spot with the locals. The delicious smell of sausages cooking wafted up to my room through the open window in the morning, and the restaurant was bustling for Saturday brunch when I checked out. I skipped brekkie to save room for extra fish, chips and mushy peas on the beach, but there are some delicious sounding brekkie options on the menu, like smashed pumpkin on toast and ham hock hash, and it’s all is locally sourced and seasonal.
Location wise, Artist Residence really is bang on. So close to beach that you can leave your bags and just take a towel and your togs, and then come back and shower, and in easy walking distance of The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and the Palace Pier. Because no trip to Brighton is complete without late night doughnuts and a stumble home along the seafront. Loved it.
