I love BAO Soho. I love BAO Fitzrovia. Now I love BAO Borough most of all. The newest opening from the Taiwanese cult fave, BAO Borough has to be their coolest site yet, with its fun kitschy illustrated posters, sleek wooden bar, wipe-clean menus that you tick off your order with a Sharpie, scrumptious pillowy bao, lager floats, bubble tea and more.
As good for a quick solo lunch as it is for a full on feast, BAO Borough is an any time, any day kind of place right on the edge of Borough Market. Really showing its ability to cater for all eventualities, there’s even a karaoke bar in the basement. And it looks like a lot of fun.
The pillowy soft Taiwanese bao are the main event and you’re gonna want to order a couple each. The chicken nugget bao is the newest addition and though I don’t eat meat, I could fully appreciate its potential deliciousness. I can’t stop thinking about the tasty, tasty prawn shia song bao though. Light and fresh (albeit deep fried), I’ll be going back for more of those. Then there's the curry cheese bao that's a tasty one for vegetarians, though pretty heavy.
The menu is broader here than at the other sites with some great options to share. The cold smoked aubergine with panko bao is delicious. The glazed tofu with Taiwanese pickle is great. The house salad is fresh and balances everything out. And if you’re a beef eater, the 40 day-aged beef with tapei butter rice and egg yolk is probs gonna be your fave thing on the menu. Ed loved it, and I couldn’t resist trying a bit of the rice and the egg and even that was taaaasty.
Desserts aren’t really a thing here but for drinks it’s all about the BAO-Hi cocktails. The melon sour is fun, with gin, miso and melon liqueur, but I'd say get the QQ-Hi: a quaffable lager float with sweet grape liqueur and a tasty Aloe Vera foam top. It's BUFF.
Can’t wait to go back.
