Tried + Tested: Blacklock, Shoreditch

Blacklock Shoreditch

Not being a meat eater, I’d always shrugged off Blacklock, a meaty, BBQ spot in Shoreditch, thinking it wouldn’t really do a lot for me. They recently launched their new Worker’s Lunch menu, and as its right across the street from The Hoxton, a few of the girls at work and I were invited to try it out...

I love the space. A renovated furniture factory, it's all polished concrete floors, dimly lit corners, industrial-style windows, exposed brick and chalkboard specials. The idea of the Worker’s Lunch is that you’re in and out within 45 minutes and it won’t set you back more than say, a Pret sarnie and drink. The halloumi salad (£10) is the only veggie option on the Worker’s Lunch menu but it’s a corker. An unreasonably generous amount of chargrilled halloumi is served on fresh dressed leaves with fiery chillis. Totally delicious, it would without doubt would fix up even the worst of hangovers. Especially if you caved and got a portion of naughty, naughty beef-fat chips to go with. Or the smokey 10-hour ash roasted sweet potato. YUM. Among the meat eaters, the general consensus was that the salt beef sarnie was the favourite (lashings of cured brisket, sauerkraut and melted Emmental are piled into two chunky slices of Brick Lane Carraway Rye), closely followed by the Blacklock steak sarnie, with bone marrow, mustard mayo, in a  warm ciabatta roll. My mate Jessie, a regular at south east London’s pie and mash shops, didn’t think Blacklock’s take on the East End pie and mash was quite up to par with her usual, but the rest of the gang thought it was pretty damn tasty. And I was all over those buttery scoops of mash...

I don’t really have a sweet tooth and rarely order dessert, but white chocolate cheesecake was on the cards so we got one serve and four spoons. It was bonkers good. Scooped out from a family-style dish and served with poached rhubarb, it was decadent, delicious (with god knows how many tubs of cream) and not overly sweet. I'd go back for that alone.

Loved the Worker’s Lunch. Next time you're hungover, or in need of a serious midday feed in Shoreditch, you know where to head.

BLACKLOCK, 28-30 RIVINGTON STREET, LONDON, EC2A 3DZ
