Checking In: Another Place, Lake District

February 10, 2020

Located on the edge of Ullswater in the heart of The Lake District, Another Place is the perfect base for exploring the great outdoors. Wake up to lake views each morning, welcome wild swimming on your doorstep, and savour being surrounded by serene and stunning landscape. Another Place has got city people in its sights. You’re encouraged to spend days outdoors, and cosy evenings recovering. R&R is the only thing on the agenda here.

40 rooms vary in size and style, though all are supremely comfortable. Ours, a suite in the contemporary wing, had a Juliette balcony with stunning views across the lake, a giant bed, and the most glorious XXL bathtub. Extra brownie points for the complimentary Tunnock’s Tea Cakes too.  Downstairs, a library-come-lounge is the ultimate rainy-day spot, perfect for settling down with a book in front of the fire or getting stuck into a board game. There are two restaurants onsite. Living Space offers good-value family-friendly comfort food, whilst Rampsbeck dishes up a more gourmet experience. Breakfast is included in rates, and a good buffet spread will have you well-fuelled for a long day of walking with its Full English offering and make-to-order American waffles.

Factor in lazy mornings at Another Place because pool time mustn’t be missed. The 20m indoor infinity pool (which had been on my wish-list for years!) has breathtaking views of the mountains around the hotel, and gives a real connected-to-nature feeling. You’ll never want to get out, trust me, but when you do there’s  a sauna and an outdoor hot tub to enjoy, along with a spa, where you can book everything from massages to manicures.

Whatever the weather, the great outdoors are calling and you really can’t come to this part of the without going out into the hills. Take your wellies and your coat and go soak up all that pure mountain air! There’s really no shortage of incredible walking routes around here, and a chalkboard in the lobby can easily guide you round some good routes of varying distances. Aira Force is a good starting point: a National Trust-ran waterfall walk, just a 5-minute drive from the hotel. More adventurous types are equally well catered for, and Another Place puts a big emphasis on encouraging people to get out on the lake. Wetsuits are provided free-of-charge, kayaks and stand-up paddle-boards are available to hire, and there are daily sessions for wild swimming and technique to get involved in too.

I like to think Another Place is perfect for easing you into the Lake District if you’re a stranger to the great outdoors. City slickers are welcomed with open arms and will leave without doubt wanting more. We’ll be back!
