London Faves: Llewelyn’s, Herne Hill

March 17, 2020

Llewelyn’s is a south London restaurant that had been on my list for a while. I finally got round to checking it out when my lovely friend, Milly, hosted a gorgeous lunch there a few weeks ago, and I loved it so much — hence why I’ve bumped it up into my London Faves edit! Easily one of south London’s most beautiful restaurants, Llewelyn’s is a delicious little sun-trap, with modern decor, located in a former Victorian dining room, and right next door to Herne Hill station. I know, it’s far south for lots of you, but trust me, it couldn’t be more convenient for getting to on public transport if it tried!

Just like Sparrow, a little restaurant I love in Lewisham, Llewelyn’s ticks all the boxes for being a perfect neighbourhood restaurant. It has a relaxed feel, a seasonally changing menu, wonderfully friendly service with a team you can happily chat to and ask for honest recommendations, and reasonable prices for brilliant food.  It’s the sort of place that feels special enough for an occasion (just like Sparrow, where we always go for birthdays), but also the sort of place you might just treat yourself to for a particularly nice Saturday lunch. The menu is designed for sharing, so I’d suggest going with someone you like. We had a wonderful lunch, sharing all sorts from the menu: burrata with artichokes and lemon, beetroot with blood orange, mint and hazelnuts, gnudi with cavolo nero and ricotta, and the most light and elegant dauphinoise potatoes. Everything was fresh, light and flavourful, and well washed down with some delicious Portuguese wines.

I really can’t wait to go back soon with Ed. I have a feeling it will be our new favourite special occasion haunt. Make the trip south, it’s worth it!
